Shifting Sands

Sand movement is actively observed in the southern provinces of Mongolia, including Govi-Altai, Bayankhongor, Umnugovi, and Dornogovi. Major sand dune systems such as Mongol Els, Bor Khyaryn Els, and Khongoryn Els gradually change in shape and position under the influence of wind. While this is a natural phenomenon, unsustainable human land use can increase the risk of intensified sand movement.
