Burkhan Khaldun (Umnudelger sum, Khentii Province)

Burkhan Khaldun” is a mountain belonging to the Khentii mountain range, located in Khentii Province of our country. It is revered by Mongolians as the birthplace of Genghis Khan, and according to legend, it is also his burial site. The Burkhan Khaldun mountain is densely covered with forests on both its front and back sides, with sparse trees and meager taiga vegetation only around the summit. “Burkhan Khaldun” is a place deeply ingrained in the hearts, minds, and religious beliefs of the Mongolian people, and official worship ceremonies have been held here since 1818. In 1992, an area of 12,000 square kilometers was designated as the Khan Khentii Strictly Protected Area under state protection. In 1995, by a presidential decree, Burkhan Khaldun Mountain was made a State-Worshipped Mountain. It was inscribed by UNESCO as a World Cultural Heritage site in 2015.
